Eyes on Learning Conference
5-6 July
Aoraki Polytechnic, Timaru campus
This week Aoraki Polytechnic is providing a professional development opportunity for people involved in teaching adults and young adults. ‘Eyes on Learning’ has been developed to enable student development through exploring learner needs and providing pathways to success.
The conference held at the Polytechnic’s Timaru campus runs over two days and include speakers, workshops and a conference dinner. Speakers include internationally renowned Bill Rogers who is a specialist in managing student behaviour and effective teaching strategies, Peter Mellow will focus on education and technology and initiative ways to help students with learning. Other speakers include Dr Angus MacFarlane on cultural diversity and Lani Morris on making your work meaningful within a school or organisation.
Coordinator of the event, Annie Avenell says the conference is an opportunity to collaborate with community and improve partnerships with other educators in New Zealand. “We have attendees from Auckland, right down to Invercargill. Many of us have the same issues and needs for new information, especially as technology is a hot topic at the moment. This is a chance to come together to encourage high quality education in New Zealand and the highlight importance of engaging youth in education.”
For the public, Peter Mellow is offering a free lecture on ‘A Philosophy of Fitness’ on Wednesday 4th July 7.30pm at Aoraki Polytechnic. Peter Mellow spent over 20 years at AUT in the Division of Sport as a Senior Lecturer in Sport Science and working within the professional development unit and now works at Curtin University as an e-learning advisor. He has finished 14 marathons, one Ironman triathlon, and attended the 2000 Sydney Olympics as a researcher as big highlights.
