Japanese students give
back to Porirua
Japanese students from Oberin University, who studied at the Porirua campus recently, have given back to the Porirua community as part of their studies.
The students were the first in an experimental arrangement between Whitireia New Zealand and Oberin University in Japan. Five were involved, they lived with local families, studied English Language at Whitireia and participated in volunteer work as a way of confirming their acquired language skills and to give back to the community they were part of.
The Porirua community organisations that the students worked with were arranged by Kiri Bishop, International Operations Manager at Whitireia. The volunteer aspect of the study undertaken by the students, presented some exciting opportunities said Kiri. “We secured volunteer positions with Mary Potter Hospice, St Vincent de Paul, Opportunity for Animals, The Police Museum and Keep Porirua Beautiful. We also set up opportunities with Friends of Maara Roa and Habitat for Humanity, weather prevented these later organisations being involved”.
The students enjoyed a variety of work and meeting new people through these organisations. The experience cemented the speaking and listening skills that they learnt through their English Language study. It was a great exercise for all involved.
The students have now returned to Japan after experiencing the New Zealand way of life for four months, enriched by what they learnt, experienced and gave back to Porirua.
