Media Release

Colgate grants wishes to nine New Zealand schools

After a rigorous selection process and three months of carton collection and creations, nine fortunate schools from across the country have scooped the top prizes in this year’s Awesome Colgate Carton Race. Another ten schools around the country received $500 spot prizes.

Kaiapoi Borough School in Canterbury and Makuri School in Pahiatua will each receive $12,500 worth of sports equipment for collecting the highest number of Colgate toothpaste cartons per pupil in their respective categories; schools with 250+ pupils and schools with less than 250 pupils.

Canterbury’s Woodend School and Ohura Valley Primary near Taranaki took second place in the race, each winning the $7,500 prize, while St Johns Hill School in Wanganui and Destiny School in Auckland have each scored $5,000 worth of equipment for third place.

Colgate’s Creative Carton category, in which students were challenged to construct an athletics or sports-themed piece of art made out of Colgate cartons, saw three schools win a share of $10,000 worth of sports equipment.

Judged on the students’ originality and creativity, Sandspit Road School in Waiuku took out the top prize for its “Sandspit Colgate Chairlift” creation, winning $5,000 worth of sporting equipment. Rotorua’s Owhata School won second place receiving the $3,000 prize, while Waikato’s Tatuanui School scored third place and $2,000 worth of equipment.

While the object of the race was for schools to collect as many empty Colgate toothpaste cartons as possible between March 26 and June 29, the initiative was part of a wider awareness campaign to promote the importance of healthy lifestyles and encourage Kiwi kids to get brushing.

Colgate-Palmolive’s Marketing Director, Jarrad Murray, says he is proud to be a part of an organisation which supports healthy lifestyles in schools.

“Congratulations to all the schools that won prizes this year, we had an amazing response. The students really gave it their all, both to collect cartons and create some amazing works of art. It’s fantastic to see so much enthusiasm for the competition,” he stresses.

“Colgate is pleased to be able to support schools and encourage active lifestyles, while at the same time reminding us all of the importance of good oral health.”
