Love your Māori Language Week at CPIT

Love your Māori Language Week at CPIT

When it comes to Māori Language Week CPIT is walking the talk, or rather the Te Reo, with a week of events and activities from 23 to 28 July designed to make everyone fall in love with Māori language.

No matter who you are, you can enjoy an introduction to Māori culture and language or deepen your connection with Te Reo through performance, art, food, sport, storytelling and more.

National Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week, this year celebrates the theme Arohatia te Reo – Love your Language.

CPIT has a long standing and increasingly well-rounded involvement with Māori culture and language. “We offer many ways to engage with and educate ourselves about Māori culture at CPIT, from our core strategic goals, to our Te Puna Wanaka Māori and Pasifika programmes to our campus-wide Māori Exemplar Tool and Treaty of Waitangi workshops for staff,” CPIT Chief Executive Kay Giles said.

“In addition, Māori Language Week gives our staff, students and community the chance to participate, whether through learning a few basic phrases, checking out our art exhibition or joining in a traditional hangi meal – everyone is welcome.”

CPIT’s Te Puna Wanaka, Centre for Māori and Pasifika Achievement, Creative Industries and the CPIT Library are all presenting events. The week begins with a Karakia and address from senior management followed by a Kapahaka performance at 9.30am in the Rakaia Centre.

Highlights of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week include a kiorahi, traditional sport, tournament on 24 July at 10am, bilingual movie entertainment for all ages on 25 July at 3.30pm and ‘Iwi Off’ with waiata and haka from around Aotearoa on 26 July at 9.30am.
