Celebrating General Staff Day at tertiary institutions

They make up nearly half of the people working in our universities, polytechnics and wānanga. They go by a range of names: general staff, professional staff, allied staff, technicians, librarians, administrators, cleaners and maintenance, and more. They are crucial to making sure New Zealand students continue to get the world class learning experience that they deserve and expect.

So, this Wednesday, staff at many tertiary education institutions are celebrating their general staff with the fourth annual TEU General Staff Day.
Most vice-chancellors have agreed to give their general staff an extended lunch break, which staff will use to host picnics, quizzes, mid-winter cupcake sharing, barbeques and tree planting.

The full details of each event are available at http://teu.ac.nz/2012/07/general-staff-day-events-2012/
TEU’s national president Sandra Grey says the purpose of General Staff Day is to celebrate the contribution general staff members make to the union and to their workplace.

"But for many general staff it is also a chance to speak as a group about the challenges they face - workload pressures from funding cuts, pay systems that don’t reward experience and loyalty or job insecurity as a result of ill-considered restructuring and redundancies."

Sandra Grey will be in Dunedin to celebrate General Staff Day with general staff at Otago University.

You can join Sandra Grey for General Staff Day:
• 25 July 2012
