National Standards will give parents misleading information

20 September 2012

Immediate Release

National Standards will give parents misleading and poor quality information

NZEI Te Riu Roa says parents need accurate and fair assessments of their children’s progress and school effectiveness and that’s why the release of National Standards information later this month will be a big step backwards.

National Standards will not give parents a fair or accurate indication of their child’s progress or give a fair assessment of the effectiveness of a school, says NZEI vice-president, Frances Guy.

“National Standards are dangerous, misleading and as our Prime Minister himself stated, ‘ropey’. They have never been tested or trialled.”

“The Government has not been able to justify its decision to go down the path of unfair and untested National Standards so it spending money on “jacked-up” research projects in order to justify that decision.”

“Like the costly National Standards experiment, that money that would have been better spent on public education.”

“We reiterate that the best way to get quality information is to visit your child’s school and talk to teachers and principal,” she says.
