Wintec offers home maintenance course for Habitat families

Wintec is offering a home maintenance course for Habitat for Humanity families starting this weekend.

Eight Habitat families from Hamilton will take part in the pilot of a home maintenance course, run by Wintec’s School of Trades tutors.

Habitat offers the families a pathway from rental to home-ownership. To ensure that families have the practical knowledge of how to take care of their home when they become the homeowner, Habitat and Wintec have developed a home maintenance programme.

Topics covered include general maintenance, the use of tools and safety, and how to make urgent repairs. The course, held at Wintec’s Rotokauri campus in Hamilton, starts this Saturday and is followed up by four evening sessions.

Wintec Dean, Merran Davis said: “Maintaining a home can be daunting, but we’ve created the home maintenance programme with a specific hands-on and skills-based focus. It should go a long way in equipping these families with the necessary skills to keep their homes healthy and safe.”

“We’re delighted to be part of the initiative with Habitat for Humanity to create a more responsible community.”

Wintec and Habitat for Humanity have a strategic alliance, and this is one of many joint projects the two organisations are working on.

General Manager of Habitat Central North Island, Nic Greene said: “This maintenance programme is an excellent example of how an education provider and a not-for-profit organisation can work together to provide support to our community.”

As a not-for-profit aimed at eliminating sub-standard housing, Habitat for Humanity Central North Island has built over 100 simple, decent and affordable homes for families in housing need since 1995.

This programme may be rolled out to the wider community in the future.
