Payroll Errors Will Blight Return To School

Teachers and support staff will be returning to school to be greeted by ongoing errors in the Ministry of Education’s new pay system Novopay.

NZEI Te Riu Roa has sought a written assurance from the Ministry of Education that the pay issues it raised on behalf of individual members will be resolved in the next pay period and that it has a plan for fixing the many errors in the system.

NZEI National Secretary Paul Goulter says that schools deserve to know when the problems are going to be fixed.

He says members, in particular relievers, continue to express extreme frustration over the situation and the ongoing difficulty they are facing in receiving their correct pay.

“We are concerned going into the last term of the year how the ongoing stress of the issues will affect the morale of support staff who are trying to sort out problems and those who still haven’t received their correct pay.

“We know that payroll officers have been working extra hours over the holiday to try and resolve pay issues however we are concerned that despite their best efforts the problems are going to continue.”

Principals have also been deflected into sorting out pay issues and this has taken them away from their other important duties which go into running a school.

NZEI’s membership call centre reports that in the last fortnightly pay period it has received approximately 100 calls from members with issues around the Novopay system. The numbers have increased over each pay period. Many of the members have had help resolving their issues, but between 40 and 50 remain unresolved to date.
