New Building Set To Impress
The new multi-million dollar building, currently under construction at the Whitireia Porirua campus is set to impress Nursing and Paramedic students as they return to or start their study in February.
Work is almost complete on the new 3817 square metre facility that will house the Health Faculty, administration, classrooms and conference facilities.
The building will include laboratories, state-of-the-art simulation suites and will provide training facilities to around 1000 nursing and paramedic students and faculty staff from February.
The building is full of very modern features including inter-room sliding doors allowing for flexible teaching class sizes, open work spaces allowing flexibility for staff, learning streets that will become a focal point and hub of student life, a place of interaction and self-learning, creating an atmosphere for excellence on campus. Students are set to be impressed.
“There are a number of eco-friendly features to this building – of particular mention is the storm water collection that will be contained in a 50,000 litre underground storage tank and used for toilet flushing and garden irrigation” said Kelvin Irvine, Whitireia New Zealand. The hot water will be solar heated and the design of the building has allowed for the concrete structure to be used as a latent heat storage facility that will assist with heating the building.
The building has a real connection to the local landscape thanks to the wonderful artwork that has been completed by James Molnar- this can be seen on many of the concrete columns and the internal windows as you walk through the building.
The Project Management team, Kelvin Irvine, Whitireia New Zealand, Jonathan Moss, Maycroft Construction Limited, Royden Mexted, Gaze Commercial, Michael Melville, CGM+F Architects and all the construction trades people that have worked on the building for the past twelve months have done a wonderful job in bringing this world class health training facility to Whitireia, a tertiary institution recognised as a leader in training industry ready nurses and paramedics.
The building will be blessed on the 22 January and officially opened in March.
