Whanganui UCOL Nurses already on the job

Whanganui UCOL Nurses already on the job

This week’s Nursing Graduates from Whanganui UCOL have already been given top marks from health sector employers.

Twenty two students will Graduate Bachelor of Nursing, and 15 with a Diploma in Enrolled Nursing at Whanganui UCOL’s second Graduation Ceremony at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Twenty of the Bachelor of Nursing Graduates have already been snapped up by health employers, most going to the District Health Board in Whanganui. And of the remaining two, one is doing further study and the other wants a break before seeking employment.

All but two of the Enrolled Nursing Graduates have already secured jobs.

Whanganui Programme Leader Lesley Baylis says it’s a great outcome: “Its further proof that our Nursing Graduates are trusted as skillful, reliable and knowledgeable employees. It’s also good news for the Whanganui health sector where most of our graduates have found positions with the DHB or other health providers, such as GPs or the Kaitoke Health Centre. Only a few have taken positions outside the region.”

Lesley also sees the employment outcome as a case of giving back. “The Whanganui health sector, especially the DHB, has contributed to the successful training of these nurses by making work experience available to them. Bachelor of Nursing students do 33 weeks of clinical experience during the three year programme. The Enrolled Nursing students do 18 weeks over their 18 month programme.

“At UCOL we also place a big emphasis on simulating real life conditions and situations during our Nursing training. That, plus their work experience, is what gives our Graduates the edge.”

Lesley says this year’s crop of Nursing graduates also excelled in State Finals. “Of those who sat in November (all but one who was ill and is sitting this month), we had a 100% pass rates for both Nursing programmes.”
