NZEI commits to support package for affected schools in Christchurch
The National Executive of NZEI Te Riu Roa is holding a special meeting in Christchurch today, to meet with many of the schools affected by the merger and closure and process, and to commit resources to support those schools.
National President Judith Nowotarski says that the National Executive has been meeting with some school affected by merger and closure proposals today to show solidarity and to listen to what NZEI members want.
“Schools and their communities are still uncertain as to how change will be managed and what the impact will be on their children’s education. Discussions today have reinforced how important it is that the Minister genuinely listens to submissions schools have made on her interim decisions.”
Nowotarski said that is why the union has committed funding for a dedicated staff member to provide support to staff at the affected schools. She said NZEI was pleased that the Ministry of Education had agreed to a more transparent process of engagement with educators and schools following the initial flawed process.
