Mozart and Schubert at NZSM

Mozart and Schubert at NZSM

Te Koki New Zealand School of Music welcomes Bremen-born international pianist Konstanze Eickhorst this week when she jets in from Europe to perform the first concert in the 2013 New Zealand International Piano Festival (NZIPF).

Ms Eickhorst’s visit to Wellington is a collaboration between NZSM, NZIPF and the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust and her Wellington concert and masterclass are the only festival events being held outside of Auckland this year. “We had a similar collaboration in 2012 when we hosted Russian pianist Sofya Gulyak here and NZSM Piano Lecturer Jian Liu performed and gave a masterclass in Auckland,” recalls Professor Elizabeth Hudson, NZSM Director. "We are delighted to be able to welcome a performer of Ms Eickhorst’s stature. Hosting international guest artists at the School enhances and supports the educational experiences of all our students, not only the pianists, and it provides a wonderful opportunity for the wider Wellington music community.”

As a solo pianist, Ms Eickhorst has a long list of awards and tributes that include first prizes in the highest-ranked competitions such as the Clara Haskil Competition and the Géza Anda Competition. She has recently recorded two CDs for the highly-rated CD label Genuin of Leipzig, the first concentrating entirely on music by Mozart, and the second on the music of Schubert. These are the two composers who will feature in her concerts for both NZSM and NZIPF, and her obvious command of the repertoire will make for an exciting and authoritative listening experience.

Canadian critic Richard Perry noted that ‘Konstanze Eickhorst … is clearly an artist with an unusual depth of poetic response as well as a superb technician. Not only was her reading practically note-perfect, leonine in strength and convincingly thoughtful, it also exhibited a maturity of emotional conviction.'

Konstanze Eickhorst will give her sole Wellington performance on Thursday 18 April from 7:30pm in the Adam Concert Room of the NZSM’s Kelburn Campus, through Gate Seven, Kelburn Parade, Victoria University. Tickets are available online through www.eventfinder.co.nz: Adults $19, Seniors/Students $10. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door: Adults $25, Seniors/Students $15.

She will present a masterclass between 10am-noon on Friday 19 April in MSRoom 211 at the NZSM Kelburn Campus and observers are welcome.
