Medals icing on the cake for cookery students

UCOL Wairarapa cookery students have picked up a number of prizes at the Hawkes Bay Central Salon Culinaire competition over the weekend.

Megan Tearle, Joseph Parata, Casey Watson, and Youth Guarantee students Thomas Pepper and Cheryl-Kay Phillips competed at the Salon Culinaire in a series of classes.

The team won the Lamb, Beef and Cheese Cake categories, and picked up six medals and two merits overall.

Results:

Megan Tearle: 1 silver medal and 1 Merit
Thomas Pepper: 2 bronze medals
Casey Watson: 2 bronze medals
Cheryl-Kay Phillips: 1 bronze medals
Joseph Parata: 1 Merit

UCOL Cookery lecturer Damian Peeti says the results are fantastic. “This is the first time UCOL students have taken part in the Hawkes Bay competition so winning awards is a real bonus. The students trained on top of their class time for this event so I’m really proud of them.”

UCOL Wairarapa is now preparing a second team, to compete in the Wellington competition at the end of May.
