Training Timely for IT Security Specialists

Training Timely for IT Security Specialists

11 June 2013

A brand new cyber security and information assurance course designed for IT security specialists is very timely, says WelTec Chief Executive Linda Sissons. “There has been a lot of publicity recently about government security systems and processes including the need for ‘appropriately qualified staff who are able to identify security or privacy risks and routinely act to reduce or eliminate these risks’ (Review of Publicly Accessible Systems, GCIO, letter to Iain Rennie State Services Commissioner dated 19 December 2012 and released on 6 June 2013). Our new course is specifically designed to upskill those people working in the areas of IT security and information assurance.”

WelTec’s Head of Business & IT Mick Jays says the week-long course is being offered throughout the year with the first course starting on 8 July. “We are still taking enrolments for the course, but would anticipate that with speakers such as Howard Broad former Commissioner of Police, Sam Pickles Chief Technology Officer at Aura RedEye Security Ltd and Information Security Audit and Assurance specialist Alisdair McKenzie, the course will fill quickly.”

The course is available to those working in IT and for people working in an environment where cyber security is critical. WelTec’s School of Information Technology (IT) is one of the largest and most highly regarded in the country having run specialised courses and qualifications in cyber and security for the past 8 years. WelTec is experienced in running degrees and graduate diplomas which have information security majors. This experience combined with expert staff means the new course is ideal for businesses and government departments requiring staff to be trained in the highly specialised and dynamic field of IT.

WelTec’s Chief Executive, Dr Linda Sissons says, “The internet has done away with traditional borders, creating significant opportunities for New Zealand. With those opportunities come extra risks, and this training is all about building New Zealand’s capacity to manage the risk so we can take advantage of the opportunities safely.

WelTec is highly regarded by industry for its programmes in this field. The Fundamentals of Information Assurance and Security course is a one week condensed course designed to meet the latest New Zealand and international standards. It is an NZQA approved Level 6 course with a final examination on the last day of course. WelTec also offers the Graduate Diploma in Information Assurance & Security (Level 7) which is a full-time programme. Graduates of this programme find employment as computer security consultants, forensic investigators or security testers for the government or private sector.
