UCOL Furniture Makers Are Plane-ly Good
UCOL Diploma in Furniture Design and Making student Thomas Melchner gave his lecturers a run for their money at the Kawerau Woodskills Festival last week.
Thomas was awarded second place in the Furniture section, just one place behind UCOL Furniture making lecturer Andy Halewood who took out first prize.
Andy says, “Thomas’s Ash and Black Maire table was a simple design, and it was very well made.”
Thomas was also second in the Pinus Radiata section and third in the novice section, a category for rookies who have never won a competition.
The UCOL team of six students and two lecturers from the Furniture Design and Making programme won a total of 12 awards at the three-day festival.
Student Leilani Tunnage came second in the Novice section with a Black Maire and Puriri bedside cabinet.
Sarah Wilkins and Adam Laker were each awarded a merit in the Novice section.
Leon Dixon gained a merit in the Furniture section and highly commended in the Novice section.
Peter Wright was highly commended for a bedside cabinet and for his light sculpture.
UCOL Lecturer Rowan Dicks received a Highly Commended in the Pinus Radiata category.
Andy says, “We have become a significant presence at the Woodskills Festival. Everyone in our team has come home with a reward for their efforts.”
The improvement of the standard and quality of the Diploma student’s work from previous years has been phenomenal.”
“Staff and students should be extremely proud of their achievements at this national event which attracts leading woodworkers from around New Zealand,” says Andy.
