High power event comes to Christchurch

High power event comes to Christchurch

Feigning a serious injury is not the usual tactic for getting an employer’s attention, but it is one way in which CPIT electrical students are helping out at the Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation (ESITO) Annual Connection event, in Christchurch for the first time, on 22 to 24 October.

The students will assist in the construction of pole circuits in preparation for the test competition exercises in both the Line Mechanic Competition and Cable Jointer Competition prior to the event and will then stand in, or rather lie in, as victims in a first aid scenario that the competitors will respond to.

“The best in the industry will be in Christchurch to compete and our students will be right there assisting and observing them. It is invaluable for them to experience the highest standards in work practice and safety in the industry and a good chance to meet future employers as well,” CPIT high voltage electrical tutor Andrew Massie said.

ESITO, which is responsible for the training standards of people working in the electricity supply and telecommunications industries, has reported its largest turnout for the event with 12 cable jointers and 12 teams of line mechanics from around New Zealand ready to demonstrate the high level of skill needed to work in the industry.

The public can attend the Annual Connection at the RNZAF Airforce Museum, Wigram, for free, to see the competitors in action. A Suppliers' Expo, Industry Forum and Excellence Awards are also part of the event.

CPIT graduate David Garraway is a nominee in the Excellence Awards, which will be announced at a dinner on 24 October. David is an apprentice with Meridian Energy and is a finalist in the Generation Trainee of the Year category.

His nomination cites David as: a natural communicator who is able to quickly adapt and fit into any working environment. David is an innovative thinker who provides well considered ideas on all aspects of the job.
