Forty-nine racers have entered the Kaharoa
School Trolley Derby which is set to take place on Sunday 22
March on Kaharoa Rd.
Kaharoa School principal Warwick Moyle said it was going to be a great day of racing and good old fashioned fun.
“We were blown away by the increase in the numbers of karts racing. Racers have almost doubled from our first trolley derby held in August 2013. It’s going to be an action-packed fun day for the whole family,” he said.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing all the kart designs and how Mums and Dads have built or modified karts with their children,” Mr Moyle said.
Twin brothers Ashton and Jackson McGarvie, aged 11, share a kart and are excited to race again this year. It will be the first time their younger sister Ella races, age 7.
“We can’t wait to race our “hot rod” kart this year. We enjoy the racing but there is so much to do when your race isn’t on. The day goes so quick,” Jackson said.
"We bought our kart off Trademe but will add lights and spray paint it to make it look even cooler,” Jackson said.
“Each kart gets three races down the track, so we will both get a turn and whoever is fastest will get to race in the third heat and hopefully get in the finals,” said Ashton.
“Last time Jackson had the fastest time, so this year I hope it will be me,” said Ashton.
Their sister Ella is in the younger category so she will get to race in all three of her heats.
The event is being supported and organised by the Kaharoa School Parent Teacher Association, with a team of 10 parents running the event. It is a fundraising event with all money going to Kaharoa School.
Event co-ordinator Mel Davies encouraged everyone to come along on the day.
“The trolley derby is a great day out for the whole family. You have the karts to watch, and some of them are pretty amazing. Then we have the entertainment – bouncy castle, gator rides, paintball target shooting.”
“And to keep everyone’s energy up there will be delicious home cooked food for sale,” Mrs Davies said.
Kaharoa Road will be closed for the event, with the race track covering about 600m of the road. Racing starts at 9am and will be finished by 3pm.
The inaugural event was held in 2013 to raise funds for Kaharoa School and in remembrance of a much-loved father from the community, Mike Donnelly. The event was so successful that it will be held every second year for the Kaharoa School PTA.
