NZ universities rank in world’s top 100 in subject rankings


New Zealand’s universities all rank in world’s top 100 in subject rankings

New Zealand’s universities rank amongst the best in the world with all eight universities making the top 100 in at least one subject according to an international report released today.

The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject are based on extensive research and the expert opinion of over 85,000 academics and 42,000 employers.

Universities New Zealand Executive Director Chris Whelan describes the results as outstanding, with New Zealand universities ranking in the world’s top 50 universities in 20 subjects and in world’s top 100 across 54 subjects.

He says, “New Zealand’s universities continue to punch above their weight despite competing against some of the biggest and best funded universities in the world.

“Our universities are incredibly important to New Zealand. We look to them to deliver our future leaders and innovators, develop work-ready graduates, generate GDP, and also to use their subject expertise to help New Zealand move towards a research and innovation-led economy.”

The 2015 results for New Zealand’s universities subject rankings are:

§ The University of Auckland is ranked 23rd globally for Development Studies. It has 13 subjects ranking in the top 50 the world and a total of 26 subjects in the top 100. Its other top 50 subjects are 26th for both Accounting & Finance, and Education; 28th for Psychology; 33rd for English Language & Literature, Law, and Linguistics; 43th for Engineering - Civil & Structural; 44th for both Computer Science & Information Systems, and Geography; Architecture / Built Environment 45th, Business & Management Studies 46th=; and Sociology 49th.

§ The Auckland University of Technology is ranked 42nd= in Art and Design and is ranked in the top 300 for Accounting & Finance, Business & Management Studies, and Computer Science.

§ The University of Waikato is ranked 51-100 in Education and was ranked in the top 150 in Accounting & Finance, Business & Management Studies, Communications and Media, Geography, Law and Linguistics.

§ Massey University is 15th in the world for Veterinary Science, one of three subjects in which Massey has been ranked in the world's top 100. Agriculture and Forestry is ranked 33rd and Accountancy and Finance is ranked between 51 and 100.

§ The Law programme at Victoria University of Wellington is ranked 45th= in the world. It has 10 subjects in the top 100 including Accounting & Finance, Art and Design, Development Studies, Education, English Language & Literature, Geography, History, Linguistics, and Psychology.

§ The University of Canterbury is ranked 44th in the world in Civil and Structural engineering. Canterbury is also ranked among the world’s elite 100 universities in Art and Design, Accounting and Finance, and Law. Overall Canterbury is ranked among the top 200 universities in the world in 21 subjects.

· Lincoln University is ranked in the top 51-100 in Agriculture & Forestry.

§ The University of Otago is ranked 8th in the world in the field of Dentistry, the highest-ranked subject from any New Zealand university in the latest rankings, and the first subject taught at a New Zealand University to ever feature in the world’s top ten. Dentistry was joined by Psychology (ranked 31st) as one of two Otago subjects to feature in the world’s top 50. English Language and Literature, History, Philosophy, Geography, Development Studies, Education and Law at Otago also featured in the world’s top 100.

QS Head of Research, Ben Sowter says, “The world-class performance of the New Zealand institutions reflects their high-impact research and outstanding reputation among an industry-leading sample of global academic experts and graduate employers.”
