Stimulating Winter Week
on University of Auckland campus
Nationalism,
Dave Brubeck and the evolution of ‘Māori Blues’,
predator free New Zealand and geothermal energy are among
some of the topics being aired at the Centre for Continuing
Education’s Winter Week on Campus.
University of Auckland academics who are both expert in their field and passionate about teaching adults will be offering the popular annual programme from July 6 to 10.
Those attending need no experience of university study — just a love of learning and an interest in the key issues of our time.
The session on “Empire: New Kingdom Egypt”, for example, will examine how one of the world’s earliest empire’s managed the political, social, military and economic challenges of imperial domination and assess what empire meant to ordinary Egyptians and those whom they ruled.
Another lecture explores the ideological and philosophical bases of nationalism, and the different forms it has taken, in Europe, Asia and in settler societies like New Zealand.
In “Ripples in Space”, Professor Richard Easther from the Department of Physics discuses Albert Einstein’s formulation of the General Theory of Relativity and gravitational waves.
In another session, Professor Rosalind Archer, Mighty River Power Chair in Geothermal Reservoir Engineering, will introduce participants to the scientific and engineering principles involved in the production of geothermal energy.
Three sessions will be run each day. For more information and to enrol, phone 0800 UNICONTED (0800 864 266), email conted@auckland.ac.nz or visit www.cce.auckland.ac.nz.
