UCOL Wairarapa charity house build project underway
UCOL Wairarapa Carpentry students are hard at work on the campus’ fourth charity house build project, carried out in partnership with Mitre 10 Mega and the Dugdale Charitable Trust.
Ten Certificate in Carpentry students have been working for eight weeks so far on the three bedroom, two bathroom house being constructed under UCOL’s custom-designed covered facility at the Masterton campus.
UCOL Head of School for the Built Environment, Danny Reilly says Life Flight Trust and Wairarapa Hospice will receive the profits of the sale. “The Dugdale Chartitable Trust has a real commitment to the Wairarapa community and decided that’s where the money should go.”
Last year’s house build project raised $15,000 for Wairarapa Hospice and $5000 for Life Flight Trust.
Students working on the build project are supervised by Richard Sexton, Masterton local and Registered Master Builder, who started work as a UCOL Carpentry Lecturer this year.
Mr. Reilly says Richard has got a healthy rivalry going between the house build projects at UCOL’s Wairarapa and Palmerston North campuses. “He’s an excellent recruit and the students are really motivated.”
“The build projects have been going really well and it’s such a great opportunity for students to work on a real-life venture.
“We are grateful for the ongoing support of many local and national suppliers who are providing us with discounted or donated services and products for this year’s project.”
Eight of the 10 Wairarapa students involved in the project stair-cased into the Certificate in Carpentry programme from the National Certificate in Building Construction and Allied Trade Skills. Enrolments are open now for this Level 2 programme starting in August at UCOL Wairarapa; the programme is fees free for under 25 year olds.
The house under construction will be ready for sale later in the year.
