Geography Star Heads to Wellington
Pakuranga College Year 12 student Nicholas Webber is one of twelve Geography students chosen from across New Zealand to be shortlisted for a place in the country’s International Geography Olympiad team. Students are selected annually in a nationwide Year 12 Geography essay writing competition and Nicholas is the first student to be selected from Pakuranga College. He will travel to Wellington in October where he will compete in a selection day, completing various Geographic tasks and activities against other shortlist nominees for one of the final four places in the NZ International Geography Olympiad team.
The International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) is a competition for the top 16 to 19 year old Geography students from all over the world. Four students represent each country in a series of Geography tests in a four to five day program. Students from between 30 and 40 countries compete in written, multi-media and fieldwork tests. The programme also includes poster presentations by teams, cultural exchanges, and time for students to get to know their fellow students and explore the host city.
Nicholas, who is keen to study Geography at university and wants to pursue a career in Geoscience wrote his successful essay comparing the impact of traffic congestion and air pollution in Auckland and Beijing. He is understandably excited about his trip to Wellington, saying:
“It’s going to be cool to meet other people of my age who are really interested in Geography”.
The 13TH INTERNATIONAL GEOGRAPHY OLYMPIAD will be held in 2016 in Beijing, China, under the auspices of the International Geographical Union Olympiad Task Force.
