Turakina Maori Girls College

Turakina Maori Girls College

“The Board of Proprietors (BoP) and the Board of Trustees (BoT) are keen to work together to address the challenges the Minister has presented us,” said BoP Chairperson Reverend Wayne Te Kaawa. “Our first priority is to make the hostel safe and comfortable for our wahine. We also aim to re-establish the important role the church has had with the school over the past 110 years.”

“During our consultation a number of groups and individuals have indicated they are keen to invest in Turakina and help us work through the changes that are needed for a sustainable future. With the help of our alumni association, Nga Wahine o Turakina Nga Hara inc we will all be working hard to ensure we have enough girls to make us viable into the future,” said BoT chairperson Trish Biddle-Amoroa. “Turakina is a unique school, having a proud record of enabling our students to achieve academic excellence and leadership, to develop their talents and be secure in their culture and developing a sisterhood that is based on values like whanaungatanga.”

“The Minister has given us until 6 November to demonstrate that we are viable. Together we will ensure that Taonga Turakina is here for our girls and the kaupapa of “Miria te pounamu piata ana: Polish the gem till the brilliance shines through.”
