2016 Students Welcomed to WelTec
2016 Students Welcomed to WelTec
WelTec is welcoming a
large cohort of New Zealand and international students over
the coming fortnight to its Wellington CBD and Petone
campuses.
With 8700 students (equating to 4066 Equivalent Full-Time Students) at WelTec in 2015 and strong enquiries for study in 2016, the enrolment desk is expecting to be very busy in the weeks ahead.
Twenty-five separate orientation events are planned to familiarise students with campus life. “The orientations are a really fantastic opportunity for students to come to our Wellington or Petone campuses and get themselves set up for a successful academic year with us,” says Claire Hurley Manager of the Student Experience Team at WelTec.
“Writing workshops, sessions on tips for successful study, and goal setting are some of the free pre-study services we recommend new students attend to assist them in getting the best from their study experience. Advice on StudyLink and budgeting along with community support services such as Vibe will be available at all student orientations.
“As well as time to meet their tutors and other students, and learn about our support services, there is a lot of fun stuff too. A Carnival Day on 26 February includes free entertainment, a BBQ, sports events, health and wellbeing checks, prizes and giveaways. This event is open to new students and their families and whanau and we really encourage anyone new to WelTec to come along,” says Claire Hurley.
An orientation for Maori students will be held at Waiwhetu Marae this Friday 12 February from 9.15am. Lots of activities are planned for students in support of E Tu Whānau enabling students to receive eye tests and other health checks. A BBQ and Ki o Rahi tournament will be held for students on the day.
A Pasifika orientation will be held on 26 February
involving presentations from WelTec graduates, an
introduction to available support services and information
about scholarships, all with friends, family and the wider
Pasifika community involvement.
International students
will be welcomed on 25 and 26 February with a special
orientation programme setting the new arrivals up with all
they need to know about the kiwi lifestyle and studying at
WelTec.
Trimester 1 2016 at WelTec starts on 29 February with formal Mihi Whakatau for new students and staff at the Petone Campus (Kensington Avenue) and Church Street Wellington campus.
