Schools around the country calling for nominations

Schools around the country calling for nominations

Nominations are now being called for school trustees. Over the next 5 weeks the election of about 13,000 parent representatives will fill positions on approximately 2500 school boards, making this New Zealand’s biggest democratic event.

The nomination period runs until noon on Friday 20 May for those using the common election date. Schools are calling for trustees that will form a board with a good balance of gender, ethnicity and skills to support the educational opportunities for each and every student.

School Trustee Election Project Manager Janet Kelly says schools are well-prepared for the elections and she encouraged people to get their nominations in early.

"Many of the current trustees are looking to stand again, which means there is a strong starting point for new trustees to come on board.

"It’s great to hear from people who are considering standing for the first time. It’s exciting to hear when people are passionate about their local school and want to see it succeed. We look forward to many of them standing during nominations."

For those considering trusteeship for the first time, Janet Kelly suggests they contact their local school for more information. She also encouraged people to nominate others they think would make good trustees.
