UCOL cuts student support

UCOL cuts student support

Students will miss out because UCOL yesterday informed dozens of student support staff that they will be made redundant over the next one to two months.

UCOL announced today that it will cut jobs from librarians, IT student support and student health centre staff.

TEU branch president Steve Wharehinga says all the people that UCOL is getting rid of work hard to help Palmerston North students learn.

“They are loyal, experienced and students value them.”

Wharehinga says next year’s new students will not know that they are getting less learning support from fewer staff.

“Today’s decision is bad for Palmerston North and bad for students.”

Although UCOL is also creating a number of full-time positions, most of people whose jobs will go are women who work part-time and have family commitments.

Wharehinga says many of the people who lose their part-time jobs will not be able to do the new full-time positions.

UCOL plans to contract out both its IT student support work and the work of the Student Health Centre staff.
