Cans for Good collection for The Salvation Army begins at local schools

Primary school children from more than 180 schools around the country will be collecting cans for The Salvation Army this week (14th- 17th November).

Wattie’s Cans for Good is a new national can collection hoping to collect over 25,000 cans to help The Salvation Army stock up much needed food parcels in the lead up to Christmas. Cans collected by schools will be matched by Wattie’s, potentially taking the total collection to 50,000 cans.

“Christmas is an extremely difficult time for many families, so food donations from Wattie’s Can’s for Good will make a real difference to New Zealanders when they need it the most,” says The Salvation Army’s National Secretary for Social Services Pam Waugh.

“We provided more than 55,000 food parcels to help Kiwis in need get back on their feet in 2015, and this year the number of people needing help continues to grow.”

Participating schools have the opportunity to create something out of their donated cans, be it a picture or shape made out of cans or a low level can-structure.  The five schools with the most creative ‘can creation’ will receive a $500 voucher which can be put towards art or school suppliers.

Wattie’s Cans for Good goes beyond other fundraisers as it will combine collecting for charity with a creative competition and a set of teacher based resource sheets designed to engage children and teachers, in a fun, team-based experience.
