Parents and children from Karori Kids Preschool and Campbell Kindergarten have decided to postpone the presentation of their petition asking the Minister to save the two centres following constructive talks with the Ministry of Education today.
Families were to assemble at parliament Thursday morning for a picnic and brief presentation of the petition, after Victoria University announced its intention to sell the site of the two centres.
Parents from the two centres have been campaigning on the issue since late last year, with a petition receiving more than 1500 signatures.
“On the eve of the petition launch, we met with the Ministry of Education. They informed us they were close to an agreement with the university to transfer the land Karori Kids and Campbell Kindergarten are sited on back to the Ministry” said Amanda Coulston, the Chief Executive of Whanau Manaaki Kindergartens, which runs Campbell Kindergarten.
“This action will safeguard the future of the two centres, ending the uncertainty we have experienced for many months. We commend both the Ministry of Education and Victoria University for coming up with a solution that is indeed the right thing to do.”
Karin Schofield, a parent from Karori Kids is pleased that the issue is being resolved.
“We are very grateful to the wider Karori community for getting behind the two services and fighting to keep two highly regarded community services which have provided quality education for more than 35 years.”
