World Aids Day 2000
Kia ora, forwarded from the New Zealand AIDS Foundation. This message has three parts: 1) the theme of World AIDS Day 2000 and some info about World AIDS Day; 2) nationwide events; and 3) local events - from Northland to Invercargill.
2000 World AIDS Day
The World AIDS Day Campaign theme for 2000 is 'Men make a difference'. In the fight against HIV/AIDS it is men, both in New Zealand and elsewhere in the world, who most need to take responsibility for safe sex.
In New Zealand the vast majority of people who have HIV/AIDS are men who have sex with men and it is only through their universal adoption and maintenance of safe sex that HIV/AIDS can be defeated.
However, that doesn't let men who have sex with women off the hook - safe sex isn't just to stop HIV infection: there are many other sexually transmitted infections besides the danger of unplanned pregnancy. The evidence is that men are not meeting their share of the responsibility, and that must change.
Therefore in the fight against HIV/AIDS in New Zealand it is vital that men take responsibility to protect themselves and their male and/or female partners from HIV rather than relying on their partner(s) for protection - partners who may also be relying on them. Today, as it was 10 years ago, the best protection from HIV is still the condom.
Engaging all men, and especially men who have sex with men, as partners in the fight against AIDS, gives us our best opportunity of reducing transmission to other men and women. This is a chance we must take.
