National screening conference looks at health or cervical and breast screening

National screening programmes for women's cancers will be discussed at a national conference being held in Auckland tomorrow, Tuesday 29 May, at the Ellerslie Convention Centre.

The Challenge of Screening national conference will be addressed by top speakers from New Zealand and Australia. It will look at lessons learned from problems in screening programmes in Gisborne and Otago, and what is needed to ensure the programmes are successful.

Professor David Skegg of Otago University will look at the essential requirements of successful screening programmes and the ethics of screening together with an assessment of the impact of the Cartwright and Gisborne inquiries (starts 9.30 am)

At 10.15 am Jeanette Ward, Director of the Needs Assessment and Health Outcomes Unit in Sydney will discuss her innovative work on how women are invited into programmes, what their information needs are and new challenges in achieving informed consent.

Following this Dr Julia Peters, Clinical Director of the National Screening Unit will report on recent progress made in breast and cervical screening in New Zealand.

The Conference has been organised by the Women's Health Action Trust and 130 people from all around New Zealand are enrolled.
