May vehicle registrations up from last year

Vehicle registration statistics released today by the Land Transport Safety Authority show an increase in the total number of new and used imported vehicles registered in May compared with the same month last year.

There were a total of 20,532 first-time vehicle registrations last month, an increase of 509 or 2.54 percent on May 2000, the LTSA said today. The number of registrations, is also up on April 2001, when 17,197 vehicles were registered for the first time.

Car registrations rose 2.7 percent, from 15,986 in May 2000 to 16,419 last month (13,585 in April 2001). Truck registrations were down 6.07 percent, from 2075 to 1949 (1513 in April 2001).

Motorcycle registrations dropped from 336 to 245 (250 in April 2001), while trailers were up from 1260 to 1460 (1458 in April 2001). Tractor registrations rose from 110 to 162 (132 in April 2001), while bus registrations were up from 50 to 64 (61 in April 2001).

Of the 16,419 first-time car registrations last month, 4466 were new and 11,953 were used, compared with 4865 new and 11,121 used in May 2000 and 3670 new and 9915 used in April 2001.

The market share leader for new car registrations last month was Holden, with 16.21 percent, ahead of Ford with 15.88 percent. Toyota was in third place for the month on 13.03 percent. The three most popular models for the month were the Holden VX Commodore, the Ford Falcon and the Toyota Camry.
