Spencer Lilley Elected LIANZA President

Spencer Lilley, Hokowhitu Librarian at the Massey University’s, Palmerston North Campus has been elected President of the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (LIANZA) for the 2001-2002 term.

LIANZA with a personal and institutional membership of 1500 is the professional body in New Zealand for those engaged in librarianship and information management.

Spencer became President on 1 July 2001 and will serve one year as President.

“I am extremely pleased to be elected as President of LIANZA,” Spencer said. “The three main areas that I wish to focus on during the term of my Presidency are; advancing the National Information Strategy developed by LIANZA in 2000/2001; funding of public libraries and associated public and private good issues; and increasing the profile of library and information professionals within New Zealand.”

A personal member of LIANZA for 14 years, Spencer has served in a number of roles. He chaired the Bicultural Special Interest Group and the Ikaroa (Central Region) as well as being a member of the LIANZA Council between 1996-1998. Spencer was also Vice-President of LIANZA for the 2000-2001 term.

Spencer has served as a librarian at the Parliamentary Library and the New Zealand Treasury as well as a lecturer in information and library studies at the Wellington College of Education.
