Vehicle Registrations Up For Tenth Straight Month

Figures released by the Land Transport Safety Authority show a 20 percent increase in vehicle registrations last month compared to January 2001 - the tenth month in a row that registrations have been up on the previous year.

There were 20,232 first-time registrations of new and used imported vehicles last month, compared with 16,837 in January 2001.

Car registrations rose 21 percent, from 13,428 in January 2001 to 16,249 last month. Of the first-time car registrations last month, 5,015 were new and 11,234 were used, compared with 4,312 new and 9,116 used in January 2001.

The market share leader for new car registrations last month was Holden with 16.8 percent, ahead of Toyota with 14.6 percent, Ford with 10.1 percent, Mitsubishi with 9.3 percent and Honda with 9.1 percent.

The three most popular new car models for the month were the Holden VX Commodore, Toyota Corolla and Ford Mondeo.

Truck registrations were up 24 percent, from 1,330 last January to 1,652 this year. Motorcycle registrations (over 60cc) were up from 372 in January 2001 to 433 last month, while trailers were up from 1,241 to 1,301. Tractor registrations rose from 127 to 190, while bus registrations were up from 47 to 115.
