Mayor Launches New Appeal Approach
26 April 2002
Launching The Salvation Army’s new approach to its nationwide annual appeal, Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey today expressed his delight at being involved and his hope for the public to again support New Zealand’s favourite charity.
Pledging to get out on the streets to lend a hand during next week’s appeal Mr Harvey encouraged other mayors and community leaders to do the same.
Mr Harvey together with The Salvation Army Public Relations Officer Lt. Colonel Don Oliver (both pictured) wasted no time putting the appeal sign up outside Waitakere’s Community and Family Service Centre in Henderson.
The centre in Henderson is just one of many Salvation Army centres throughout New Zealand which focus on meeting the practical needs of local people. The centres typically run a range of life-skill courses, provide food parcels, clothing and furniture, offer personal counselling, and some even have their own youth and early childhood education centres.
This year The Salvation Army for the first time in many decades will not be knocking on doors for its Tuesday 30 April to Monday 6 May annual collection. Instead the public can make their donations in high foot traffic places such as supermarkets, shopping malls, and stations where Salvation Army volunteers will be standing. Also, internet banking and on line credit card donations can be made.
Lt. Colonel Don Oliver said the new approach to fundraising reflects our cashless society and respects people’s privacy and security issues.
The mode of collection may have changed but the mission of The Salvation Army has not. Through its wide network of services it is working harder than ever delivering vital community services to the public.
“New Zealanders have voted The Salvation Army to be their favourite charity for a number of years, and I am hoping they will really get behind the Red Shield appeal again this year,” said Lt. Colonel Don Oliver.
