GENERAL to visit New Zealand
GENERAL to visit New Zealand
On Wednesday 2 October The Salvation Army's international leaders, General John Gowans and Commissioner Gisèle Gowans will arrive in Wellington for a seven-day visit.
The focus for their time in New Zealand is to share in worship with Salvationists from throughout the New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga territory. These worship services plus a myriad of other events will happen throughout Wellington. In total some thirty events will take place, culminating in a series of three public worship services to be held in the Michael Fowler Centre on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October at which the General will preach. General John Gowans is an author, poet, songwriter and renowned preacher who has preached the gospel on every continent.
Over this weekend Salvationists will also be focusing on the massive human tragedy that is threatening in Sub-Saharan Africa through starvation. The Salvation Army internationally is one of a number of international aid agencies who are working in conjunction with the World Food Programme (WFP) in attempts to avert this tragedy. Over the weekend of the General's visit The Salvation Army (New Zealand Fiji and Tonga territory) aims to raise NZ$50,000 towards the Army's international aid programme. Special appeal collections will be taken at all three public worship services in the Michael Fowler Centre during the General's visit weekend, plus in Salvation Army worship centres throughout the country.
