NZMA supports Smokefree Legislation

The New Zealand Medical Association strongly supports the Smokefree Environments (Enhanced Protection) Amendment Bill, particularly the Health Select Committee’s recent proposal that smoking be banned in bars and restaurants and has written to all MPs today urging them to support the Bill.

‘We support the Committee’s view that the passive inhalation of cigarette smoke poses a serious health risk, particularly in confined spaces such as bars and restaurants,’ says NZMA chair Dr Tricia Briscoe. ‘This risk cannot be eliminated by other than a complete ban.’

‘The Bill is an important public health measure that deserves the support of all MPs and it will have positive effects on the health of future generations of New Zealanders. The NZMA strongly supports the Government in this important legislation.’
