South Cant. Independent Working Conditions Review

MEDIA STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE,
FRIDAY 27 JUNE 2003

“South Canterbury Independent Working Conditions Review Welcome”

“Health Minister Annette King’s announcement today of the independent review of the working conditions of senior doctors employed by the South Canterbury District Health Board at Timaru Hospital is welcome,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today.

“Senior doctors work under very stressful conditions due to factors such as staffing shortages and onerous after-hours emergency rosters. Despite this they do remarkably well in providing high quality standards of care and services to patients. This was expressly and overwhelmingly recognised by the public of South Canterbury in the recent bitter industrial dispute that included unprecedented strike action.”

“This independent review was one of the key achievements of our collective agreement negotiations and we are pleased that the Health Minister has elected to formally announce it to help give it the importance that it deserves.”

“We expect that the review team will listen closely to the concerns of senior doctors and to their practical suggestions for improvement,” concluded Mr Powell.
