Barnardos celebrates past and future

Barnardos celebrated its past and invested in its future on Monday with the celebration of Founders Day at Government House in Wellington.

Long serving staff of the organisation were presented Certificates of Appreciation by Her Excellency the Governor-General Dame Sylvia Cartwright, one of which went to Barnardos Chief Executive of 27 years, Ian Calder.

The event also saw the awarding of the second annual Sir John Mowbray Study award, which was presented to two members of staff from Barnardos world-leading treatment centre for youth sex offenders, Te Poutama Arahi Rangatahi (TPAR), in Christchurch.

The Awards, worth $10,000 this year will send TPAR’s Clinical Director Dave Robertson and Residential Director Melanie Bleach to the United States to present the TPAR programme to a major international audience at the National Adolescent Perpetrators Network conference in Ohio.

“It is time that the success of Te Poutama was put on the world’s stage, and this year’s Awards will enable the programme to be presented to a major international audience,” says Ian Calder, Chief Executive of Barnardos.

“It will also enable the recipients to explore the newest development in their field and to exchange knowledge with other world leading experts.”

The annual award was established in 2002 as a memorial to Barnardos New Zealand’s first Guardian, Sir John Mowbray.

It is open to all Barnardos staff for study, research, or attendance at an appropriate conference in either New Zealand or overseas. The focus is on areas of study that will benefit the recipient and contribute to the knowledge of the organisation as well as being a child focussed learning opportunity for staff.
