NZMA supports Smokefree Legislation

NZMA supports Smokefree Legislation

‘The New Zealand Medical Association is very pleased that the Smokefree Environments (Enhanced Protection) Amendment Bill was passed through its second reading in Parliament last night by a significant majority, at 76 to 39 votes,’ says NZMA Chairman Dr Tricia Briscoe.

The Bill, which will place a complete ban on smoking in pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants, is now set down for the committee stage, and Dr Briscoe says she fervently hopes it will pass through unchanged.

‘This Bill will do more to improve the health of New Zealanders than any other current legislation,’ she says. ‘Those 75 percent of New Zealanders who do not smoke have the right to a smokefree environment.’
