“Canterbury Senior Doctors Vote Overwhelmingly To Join National Negotiations”

“Senior doctors employed by the Canterbury District Health Board have voted overwhelmingly to join the national district health board collective agreement negotiations,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today. National negotiations commenced in late April and resume on 7-8 August in Wellington.

“The vote in favour of joining the national negotiations was 99%. This is the 19th ballot of senior doctors employed in DHBs and all have voted decisively in favour of national negotiations with the votes ranging from 75% to 100%.”

“Our key objective in these national negotiations is the desperate need for attractive and reasonable employment conditions so that New Zealand can recruit and retain senior doctors in a highly competitive international labour market.”

“An important reason why Canterbury senior doctors voted in favour of joining the national negotiations is so that they can ensure that their employment conditions are no longer generally inferior compared with those in many other district health boards,” concluded Mr Powell.
