New alliance to boost health care standards

Primary health provider Raukura Hauora O Tainui Trust and the College of GPs are to work together on workforce development and training.

Trust CEO Wayne McLean signed a memorandum of understanding with College president Dr Jim Vause and CEO Claire Austin this week.

“Raukura believes the cornerstone to any service provision is the ability of the workforce to deliver a quality product,” Mr McLean said. “There are real benefits in the two organisations bringing their respective strengths together under a shared vision based on quality standards and practises”.

“Both organisations recognise the strategic opportunities of working together to deliver education programmes that meet the need of the primary care workforce,” College of GPs president Dr Jim Vause said today, further identifying the joint intent to seek future training opportunities,”

The College works to improve health care for all New Zealanders by providing advocacy, support, vocational education, professional development and quality tools for general practitioners. The trust provides comprehensive primary and pre primary care services within the boundaries of Tainui.

“We wanted a formal process of engagement that defines the collective vision, principles and terms of the relationship,” Dr Vause said, “ensuring that the principles of quality standards are adhered to.”

Key objectives are:

(i) To develop clinical workforce initiatives that support the growth of primary care

(ii) Assess, support and develop specific quality standards and systems that enhance the delivery of service to primary health care

(iii) Develop enhancing and supporting cultural competencies within clinical training programmes, and primary care delivery settings.
