Senior Doctors To Seek Greater Influence In 2004
“Senior doctors will be seeking greater influence in health decision-making in 2004,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today. Mr Powell was referred to an article on the Association’s empowerment strategy in its quarterly publication (December issue), The Specialist.
“In the main senior doctors have limited influence on political, policy and managerial decision-making in the health system. And yet senior doctors are a highly specialised and enormously motivated resource with skills and experience that few others possess. Their responsibilities are immense but unwisely their influence on decision-making remains limited.”
“Senior doctors are an untapped resource. If they were to have significant rather than tokenistic influence, they could better ensure that valuable health dollars were both effectively and efficiently spent. Effective empowerment of senior doctors would make Finance Minister Michael Cullen’s much easier and less worrisome.”
“Empowerment of senior doctors in
decision-making is going to be a key objective for us in
2004,” concluded Mr
Powell.
