One of New Zealand's top women's fashion retailers will soon be opening its doors to queues of enthusiastic male customers.
The Glassons womenswear chain is breaking with tradition by launching a popular Breast Cancer Research Trust T-shirt for men.
Kiwi blokes will be tempted inside Glassons' 31 nationwide stores by the larger, loose-fit T-shirts - featuring a funky turntable design by New Zealand DJ producer P-Money.
P-Money's artwork already features on one of the five celebrity designs for women, currently on sale at Glassons stores.
The Glassons Breast Cancer Research Trust T-shirt campaign has so far raised just under $300,000.
Breast Cancer Research Trust spokesperson Sarah Paykel says the availability of men's T-shirts allows both sexes to support the campaign to raise money for breast cancer research in New Zealand.
"We hope offering a T-shirt designed by a male - in men's sizes - will boost the total numbers of T-shirts sold and get us one step closer to establishing the breast cancer research fellowship at the University of Auckland," she says.
"Who knows, the guys may even bump into celebrities like Nicky Watson - who modeled the T-shirt designed by Petra Bagust, in the Glassons changing rooms!" she says.
P-Money Urges Men To Support T-Shirt Campaign
The designer of the popular 'Hands on Turntables' T-shirt and the sole male designer, DJ Producer P-Money, says he is delighted his design will now be worn by men as well.
"I think it's really cool the T-shirts are available for guys as well so they can get behind the campaign and support their wives, partners, mothers, sisters and daughters who may have this disease at some stage in their life time, " he says.
P-Money says his T-shirt appeals to people of any persuasion or gender because of its unisex design.
"As I'm a DJ and Producer I wanted to incorporate something musical in my design, so I went for the obvious - a picture of my hands on the decks. But it's also kind of cheeky too if you read between the lines," he says.
Men At Risk From Breast Cancer
New Zealand has one of the world's highest rates of breast cancer with one in every twelve women affected by the disease over a lifetime.
Breast cancer claims more than 700 New Zealand women's lives every year.
Although breast cancer is a disease affecting predominantly women, men can also be affected.
Dr Jackie Blue, Breast Physician and spokesperson for the Breast Cancer Research Trust says breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women, but it does occur in men too - although far less often at almost one percent of all cancer diagnoses.
"It is not considered that breast cancer in men is more aggressive but because it is uncommon there is not a lot of data available. Male breast cancer generally presents as a painless hard lump behind the nipple," she says.
Men too, can now get behind the campaign to raise funds for breast cancer research in New Zealand, by purchasing a men's Breast Cancer Research Trust T-shirt now available from Glassons.
