Senior doctors congratulate government

16 July 2004

“Senior doctors congratulate government for increased primary care funding”

“Senior doctors congratulate the government for its decision to significantly increase funding for primary care,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today.

“The government’s announcement is one of the most important decisions made for sometime and should go a long way to improve the accessibility and effectiveness of high quality primary care for the public.”

“One of the next key priorities for the government will be to address the serious doctor recruitment and retention problems in primary care. The government needs to consider innovative strategies, including the ‘family-friendly’ and other advantages of salaried employment.

“Although we are mostly associated with doctors working in public hospitals, we also represent a growing number of salaried general practitioners working for community organisations,” concluded Mr Powell.
