CDHB Research Grants Announced

Eight new research grants have been announced by the Canterbury District Health Board. They are part of the CDHB’s and School of Medicine’s joint annual research programme. This year $70,000 was allocated for proposals that would be directed at improving the quality of care delivered in Christchurch. Projects which looked at the interface between the Emergency Department and other services at Christchurch hospital and/or community services would be given priority.

The projects are as follows: A randomised intervention to reduce repeated attempted suicide (Prof R Mulder, Dept Psych Medicine $9,650)

The correlation between delays in ED and length of in-patient perceptions of transfer and discharge processes (Drs Richard & Casey, Emergency Department, $9,970)

Primary Care investigation and referral for possible colorectal cancer (Dr P Hider, Public Health, $10,000)

The impact of providing a phlebotomy team in ED (Dr P Hider, Public Health & General Practice, $9,964)

Identifying important trends in hospital admissions (Dr P Hider, Public Health, $9,973)

A comparative audit of the sensitivity of Surepath liquid based cytology and conventional cytology in the identification of biopsy confirmed cervical abnormalities, (Dr P Sykes, obstetrics & gynaecology, $10,000)

Kidney stones – more than a pain in the side. Towards a smooth patient journey for patients presenting with suspected renal colic, (Dr S. Wynn-Thomas, Community Care $5,000)

Improving follow up in families with familial hypercholesterolaemia, (Prof P George & Prof R Scott, Lipid Services, $5,798)
