Group Education For People With Type 2 Diabetes
Following a successful pilot programme last year, Hawke’s Bay District Health Board’s diabetes team in conjunction with Sport Hawke’s Bay and Diabetes Hawke’s Bay have teamed up to provide free courses for people with Type 2 diabetes.
The courses, which are held throughout the year are run over two mornings and include a supermarket tour led by a dietitian; sit-and-be-fit exercise classes with a sport Hawke’s Bay instructor; and informal group sessions with a diabetes nurse educator where participants can ask questions and get free advice on practical changes they can make to help improve their health and live with diabetes.
Diabetes nurse educator, Tony Loversuch, said the next class would be held between the 11th and 18th of May. “We are aiming to keep the groups small, with between six and eight people per course,” he said. “A positive spin-off from the pilot programme was the friendships and support networks which develop over the two days,” he said.
“There are a lot of myths out there about diabetes, and what you should and shouldn’t eat, and these classes are a great way to help educate the person with diabetes and their families,” he said. “Feedback we’ve had so far has all been very positive,” Mr Loversuch said.
