HB District Health Board seeks feedback

HB District Health Board seeks feedback on draft District Strategic Plan

On Wednesday 8th June Hawke’s Bay District Health Board approved release of the draft District Strategic Plan for 2005 – 2015. The plan details progress made during the last three years and outlines the results of the 2005 Hawke’s Bay Health Status Review.

Says Board chair Kevin Atkinson “The Health Status Review delivered us a wake up call to rethink our whole approach to health in Hawke’s Bay. Nationally, health has improved substantially over the years but in relative terms Hawke’s Bay continues to fall below the New Zealand average.”

The draft District Strategic Plan outlines the six health improvement priorities the Board will focus on over the next ten years in order to help people have better, healthier lives.

These are: Reducing health inequalities: in particular improving health outcomes for Maori Child health: children are the future, in order to improve the long term health of the population there is a need to invest in strategies to improve the health of children and youth Mental health: developing services to meet the needs of consumers Health of older people: providing quality care, information and services to help older people participate in an active, healthy lifestyle Cancer: The term cancer covers more than 100 different diseases, at least one-third of which are preventable, another one-third can be effectively treated if discovered at an early stage Chronic diseases: including management of conditions such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure and heart disease.

“The draft plan represents the views of a number of community advisory and focus groups, and as such is a consultation document.” Mr Atkinson said “We want to be sure we‘ve explored every avenue possible, and that’s why we are keen to hear the views of interested members of the public or providers of health and social services.”

The draft District Strategic Plan together with a consultation document summarising the plan and seeking feedback on specific aspects of the plan, will be available from Monday 13th June. Copies will be available to read at libraries throughout Hawke’s Bay, at HBDHB reception areas at Hawke’s Bay Hospital, Wairoa Hospital, Napier Health Centre and Central Hawke’s Bay Health Centre. The documents can be viewed or downloaded from HBDHB’s website www.hawkesbaydhb.govt.nz . Copies are available on request from Emma Murfitt on 0800 300 377 or fax 06 878 1648 or email emma.murfitt@hawkesbaydhb.govt.nz
