Hospital construction about to begin
Hospital construction about to begin
Major changes are poised to take place at Tauranga Hospital, with construction of new buildings about to begin and a 300-vehicle carpark opening on Saturday (June 25).
Construction workers have begun erecting hoardings around a large area in front of the hospital, making way for work to begin on the construction of the new main entry, north wing ward block and podium buildings. They are the first buildings to be built as part of the hospital’s $110m refurbishment and construction programme, known as Project LEO (leading edge organisation).
The refurbishment of the hospital will happen in three phases.
The first phase is the construction of a new five-level north wing ward block and a new two-level podium block, consisting of medical and surgical wards, a new theatre suite and outpatient services. It is due for completion in late 2006. The second stage involves the construction of maternity wards and services for older people. It will be completed in 2007.
The second phase involves the refurbishment of the existing west wing ward block.
Phase three is the refurbishment and extension of the existing east wing ward block. This includes the establishment of a new CCU and ICU, upgrading the imaging department and a new extension to the emergency department.
