WHO-representative: “No doubt, we are in an alarming situation”
Reports of recent bird flu victims in Asia, highlights the need for global action to fight against this deadly virus and the World Health Organisation reports that Asia is already under pressure from this disease.
Experts of several UN organisations took part in the three-day conference in Kuala Lumpur to deliberate upon strategies in the fight against the viral disease.
WHO director for the region of the West Pacific, Shigeru Omi, said on Monday In the recent six month the avian plague has set the region under further pressure: “No doubt we find ourselves in an alarming situation," Omi told a conference in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.
The current outbreak of the avian flu has seen 55 people die: 39 of these people were from Vietnam, 12 in Thailand and four in Cambodia. The aggressive Virus H5N1 was the cause of illness and death in humans. The virus has also killed a large number of animals. “At the same time it behaves in a way that suggests it will stay instable, incalculable and versatile," Omi said.
