General Practice Faces Huge Red Tape Burden

General Practice Faces Huge Red Tape Burden

Compliance costs for medical practice, particularly general practice, remain a huge burden despite the Ministry of Economic Development’s announcement today that it has reduced compliance costs for small business, says the New Zealand Medical Association.

“Successive governments have promised to reduce compliance costs for small business, yet the reality is that compliance costs continue to increase for general practice,” says GP Council chairman Dr Peter Foley.

A ministerial panel for GP compliance costs was established in 2001 to make recommendations on how to reduce compliance costs.

“While reductions have been made for some small businesses, general practice has not seen the same benefit,” says Dr Foley.

“The NZMA will call on the incoming government to take decisive action to reduce the impact of regulations and the enormous workload they create, which impinge on the time we have with our patients.”
