Suspicious Package Found At Christchurch Women’s Hospital
A suspicious package was identified early this morning at Christchurch Women’s Hospital necessitating the evacuation of the maternity unit, and relocation of staff, patients, babies and family members.
Jock Muir, General Manager of Hospital & Specialist Services said ‘The package was identified by a staff member and after some discussion with a family member of the room occupant; the package was identified as not belonging to them.’
‘Emergency protocols were then activated and the Police were called. The police dog was brought in and identified that the package was harmless and this package is now with Police.’
‘Although there was some inconvenience to friends of our patients and their family members, as access to the hospital was restricted, we did this not only in the interest of the public but as part of our evacuation procedures and I would like to say thank you to the public for bearing with us whilst we undertook our investigations’.
‘I would also like to thank Police, staff, and security whose involvement in the activation and management of this event enabled a positive conclusion to this incident.’
All services at Christchurch Women’s Hospital are now operating as normal.
